Bibliotherapy involves use of books, audios and visuals such as movies. I might “prescribe” a workbook, CD or DVD as part of your work in therapy. Research has shown it to be effective in the treatment of depression. Anxiety and panic symptoms have also responded positively to the use of bibliotherapy as a supplemental approach to treatment.
Here are some of the books I often recommend:
- Feeling Good by David Burns, MD
- Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.
- Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, M.D.
- Mastery Of Your Anxiety And Panic: Therapist And Client Workbook For Anxiety And Panic by D. Barlow & M. Craske
